Bulgaria marks 65 years of membership in the UN: President sends video address to UN Secretary-General

Today, the global community faces many complex challenges: conflicts, climate change, growing inequalities and, more recently, a global pandemic. More than ever, the world needs collective wisdom and visionary leadership, President Rumen Radev said in his video greeting on behalf of the Bulgarian people to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of 65th anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to the United Nations.

"On December 14, 1955, the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution that enabled Bulgaria and fifteen other countries to take their rightful place in the revived community of nations," the head of state said.

According to him, this is a special anniversary for both Bulgaria and the UN.

In his address, Rumen Radev defined Bulgaria's accession to the UN as a natural but not an easy decision.

"In the midst of the Cold War, strong geopolitical considerations stood in the way of the largest expansion of the growing global organization at the time. This expansion would not have happened without the persistence of the UN General Assembly and the vision of statesmen like Nobel Peace Prize winner Lester Pearson, who made a bold call for the admission of new member states to the United Nations on the basis of universality, " said the Bulgarian President.

Rumen Radev emphasized that although the world today is a very different place from what it was in 1955, it is full of no less challenges. In his greeting, the Bulgarian head of state reaffirmed the country's commitment to the eternal and universal goals and principles set out in the Charter of the United Nations and expressed support for the leadership of Secretary General Antonio Guterres in strengthening the system of multilateral diplomacy.
