Bulgarian dairy farmers are going to stage a protest on 22nd of May because of the low purchasing price of milk. They are intending to block the traffic on the road between the South Bulgarian towns of Dimitrovgrad and Haskovo.
On 21st of May, the farmers met with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Minister of Agriculture Dessislava Taneva. They were promised that the state would allocate additional financial assistance of 26 million BGN and would stimulate the purchase of Bulgarian dairy products through introduction of changes in the requirements of the Bulgarian State Standard (BSS).
The producers insist on reduced VAT for the Bulgarian dairy products. However the topic will be further discussed with PM Borissov next week.
At the beginning of April, EU abolished milk quotas, which opened the market for the import of cheap products. In response, dairy farmers staged a protest in Brussels and expressed concern that the removal of the quotas might price small farmers out of the market. According to them, the lifting of quotas helps only big food companies and the largest milk producers, whose efficiency allows them to operate with small profit margins.
Russian import ban has also had an impact on the sector.
