Bulgarian Teodora Balabanova has died while attempting to set a new world record for deep diving. The tragic incident happened in Halkidiki, Greece, between the peninsulas of Kassandra and Sithonia on 24th of September.
Teodora’s aim was to reach a depth of 231 metres in open waters, which would have been a new world record.
The entire descent procedure had to last for five and a half hours.
Teodora Balabanova's latest training was on September 15, at an underwater depth of 200 metres.
The current world record is 221 metres.
Teodora’s husband, Mihail Balabanov, is in critical condition in hospital, undergoing treatment in a hyperbatic chamber.
The two are long-time divers and have a diving club in Greece.
