Bulgarian high jump athlete Mirela Demireva won the silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Demireva made one mistake at 188 cm, but then successfully jumped 193 cm and 197 cm.
Spanish athlete Ruth Beitia was awarded the gold medal in the women’s high jump by virtue of having the fewest misses.
Mirela Demireva, Croatia’s Blanka Vlasic, USA’s Chaunte Lowe and Beitia all cleared the winning of height of 1.97 m.
None of the four women could successfully jump the height of 2.00m, so the medals were decided according to misses throughout the competition.
This is the first medal for Bulgarian athletics since Tereza Marinova won a gold medal in the triple jump sector at Sidney 2000 Olympics.
