On 2 August In Skopje, the Bulgarian delegation led by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Macedonian hosts together laied wreaths to the sarcophagus of Gotse Delchev in the church of St. Spas. This is a day after the two countries signed a historic Good Neighbouliness Agreement.

The agreement was preceded by 18 years of negotiations.

The first shared observance of Ilinden Upring anniversary concluded the the two-day official visit of the Bulgarian delegation in Skopje,

Zoran Zaev greeted the participants and guests at the ceremony on the occasion and assured them that a bright future lies ahead for Macedonia as a member of NATO and the European Union.

The Macedonian Prime Minister thanked Bulgaria for the extended hand and stressed that this was the reason why 2nd of August observances were shared with representatives of the Bulgarian Government and Parliament. The region is prepared to lead a policy of maturity and wisdom, he added.

“The Ilinden uprising is commemorated in both Bulgaria and Macedonia. Many Bulgarian officers took part in the uprising, Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov told journalists

“With the signing of the Friendship and Good Neighbourliness Treaty, we put a new beginning in our relations, putting an end to a stupid historical period in the relations between the two countries, and it was high time for this to happen,” Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister said.

"Macedonia's accession to NATO entirely depends on the Macedonian side," Karakachanov said, replying to a question. He noted that Macedonia was only at the start of negotiations on membership in the Alliance. "This process cannot be completed within a couple of months. I hope that now that their problem with Bulgaria has been sorted out, the problem with Greece will be sorted out, too," Karakachanov said.

Borissov, Zaev and Karakachanov showed the media an Mi-8 military helicopter that Bulgaria sent to Macedonia on 2nd of August to help fight wildfires that have been raging in Macedonia for 10 days now. The machine is flying back from Montenegro where it also assisted in fire-fighting. It can carry up to 3 tonnes of water, Borissov said.
