BULGARIAN PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISOV AND THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL PRESIDENT DONALD TUSK HAD A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION

On 31st of August, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the European Council President Donald Tusk discussed the preparation for the meeting of the state and government leaders of the EU member states, which will take place in Bratislava on 16th of September. The phone conversation was at the initiative of Donald Tusk who will hold preliminary consultations with the rest of the members of the European Council.

Donald Tusk noted that the main topic of the forthcoming forum would be the migration crisis in Europe and the search for a single European solution.

In this context Prime Minister Borisov briefed Tusk on the talks held in Turkey with President Recep Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, as well as on the discussions in a broader format, which were hosted by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Bulgaria’s government press office announced on 31st of August.

PM Borisov presented information about the current situation along the Bulgarian border and about the actions Bulgaria takes to restrict the illegal crossing of migrants into the territory of the EU.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister confirmed his position that the EU countries and Turkey should show mutual understanding to the problems and make joint efforts to implement the agreements and the commitments undertaken so far.

“I am personally convinced in your words and I am ready to cooperate and assist in achieving practical results. Bulgaria is an important partner for us and we count on your judgement as a prime minister,” Donald Tusk said.

He congratulated the Bulgarian Prime Minister for the active diplomacy during the meetings in Turkey and Germany, adding that this approach should continue in the future.

Borisov and Tusk noted that the implementation of the agreement from March was in the basis of the partnership between the EU and Turkey.

The President of the European Council also said that during the discussions in Bratislava he would insist on reaching a united position in support for Bulgaria, which as an external border of the EU has prevented the expansion of the migration crisis.

He proposed PM Borisov to present additional requests for assistance with financial, human and technical resources.

The two also discussed a possible visit of Donald Tusk to Bulgaria, during which they will visit the border together.
