Today, October 31, for the fourteenth time, Bulgarian young people were awarded the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. A total of 53 pupils and students were awarded at an official ceremony at the Military Club in Sofia. The event is under the patronage of President Rumen Radev.
Sixteen of them received gold badges and thirty-seven - silver. The badges are given for participation in various volunteer initiatives such as caring for the elderly, increasing the physical activity of young people and for skills in areas such as learning foreign languages, algebra, embroidery and cookery.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a youth awards programme founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It aims at inspiring young people to develop their potential. For just over a year its patron was Charles, Prince of Wales. Following his accession to the throne, the title of Duke of Edinburgh reverted to the Crown.
"You go through a lot of challenges, you challenge yourself a lot, you become more responsible. I learned to cook, I learned to interact more with the elderly by visiting the nursing home," said Darena Ilieva, a gold badge winner of the "Duke of Edinburgh's International Award"
"I would like to thank you for inviting us today to celebrate together the high results achieved by you young people in overcoming the challenges and achieving the goals that you have set for yourselves to test yourselves, to become better and more confident," President Rumen Radev said.
