bulgaria’s mountain rescue services remind skiers enjoy winter sports without risk

Five days before the official opening of the ski season in the Bulgarian winter resort of Bansko, 16 mountain rescuers are on duty 24 hours a day to ensure safety on the ski runs in the resort. The mountain rescue service warns skiers to be especially careful because there is a risk of avalanches when skiing off piste.

In addition to the team of rescuers, there will be four dog handlers with search-and-rescue dogs, especially trained to find people buried in avalanches.

The rescuers warn that there is always an avalanche hazard when there is snow on the slopes. They advice skiers and snowboarders to carry individual avalanche devices, which are radio-electronic devices transmitting at certain frequency and people buried under avalanches can be detected through the same devices which every rescuer has.

The mountain rescue service has also said that in the event of an accident or if tourists lost orientation in the mountain, they are advised to dial 112 first, because this is the quickest way the accident to get reported to the rescue teams.
