Bulgaria’s Parliament re-elected Maxim Minchev as Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) with 141 votes in favour, BTA said on 18th of October. This is Minchev's second five-year term of office as BTA head. His nomination was put forward by Toma Bikov, MP of GERB.
Following his re-election, Minchev swore in as BTA Director General in Parliament.
Parliamentary Culture and Media Committee Chair Vezhdi Rashidov recalled that Minchev is Secretary General of the News Agencies World Council, and put an emphasis on his efforts to make news accessible for Bulgarian expats. BTA is the only agency currently working on popularizing the positive things happening in Bulgaria, Rashidov underscored.
Bikov recalled that several months back, Parliament unanimously adopted BTA's report for 2016 which, in his words, is enough proof of the support for Minchev's nomination, and that the Culture and Media Committee also approved of it unanimously.
Yulian Angelov, MP of United Patriots, expressed his parliamentary group's support for Minchev by noting that BTA is among the few media committed to Bulgarians abroad. The other national media should follow BTA's example, he added.
Socialist MP Ivan Chenchev also expressed support for Minchev's nomination and added that there are no fake news at BTA. "We are impressed by Minchev's presentation to the Culture and Media Committee, we wish BTA luck and wider activity," he said.
