Bulgaria can cope with the quota of 1,200 refugees, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said on 18th of September. According to him, this is the way the country will show solidarity and understanding for the problem. Borissov noted that the army had not yet been sent to the border with Turkey, because there was no need at the moment.

Borrisov suggested that a firm decision on how to politically influence the processes would be taken at the forthcoming extraordinary meeting of the European Council. I hope a decision will be taken regarding the source of the problem, which is the situation in Syria, Borissov said and added that the big European countries would agree on how to resolve it.

The unprecedented migration pressure has to be considered very carefully by the whole EU, which at the moment seems unable to make quick and clear decisions for handling the crisis, added Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Mitov. He specified that the focus should be placed at the root of the problem, i.e. the situation in Syria and the so called Islamic State. It is necessary to work in a serious coalition and Russia should be part of the solution, Mitov said.

According to him, in order to handle the situation, EU has to work in several directions. In his words, it is important to discourage migration pressure by building refugee reception centres outside the EU borders. According to Mitov, it must be made clear that refugee status does not give anybody the right to stay in the EU forever.

He added that guarding the borders on both sides of the countries should be strengthened as well as the anti-people smuggling efforts, bearing in mind that this “business” will not disappear with solving the problem in Syria.

Minister Mitov also pointed out that there would be no buffer zone on the territory of Bulgaria against migration flow. Bulgaria will not agree with such a thing, he said, adding that establishing refugee quotas would not solve anything, being a temporary solution for a limited number of people.

Refugee quotas do not discourage the migration pressure and inflows, just the opposite – they encourage them, Mitov remarked. According to him, refugee reception centres should be built outside the EU and EU should provide assistance to the countries which have already taken a large part of the burden, such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
