Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov arrived in Brussels to take part in the European Council meeting to be held on December 10 and 11.

The focus of the talks between the European leaders will be on further coordination on COVID-19 issues. Heads of state and government will review the situation and discuss joint efforts for overall coordination in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including work on vaccines and testing and the gradual lifting of restrictions. The topic of joint action to tackle the pandemic was also a major one at a meeting of the European leaders over the past two months.

The meeting will also focus on climate change. EU leaders will aim to agree a new EU emissions reduction target for 2030. This will allow the EU to submit its updated nationally determined contribution to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change before the end of 2020

The agenda of the meeting in the Belgian capital also includes issues related to security, in particular the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

In line with its October conclusions, the European Council will re-examine the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and relations with Turkey. The leaders will also discuss the EU's relations with the countries in the Southern Neighbourhood.
