Mourad Hamyd, who was arrested in Bulgaria, represents a threat for Bulgaria’s national security. This was announced by Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office on 8th of August, which confirmed that the 20-year-old relative of one of the participants in the terrorist attack at the Paris headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was detained in July in Bulgaria after an attempt to cross into Turkey, probably on the way to Syria.

Hamyd entered Bulgaria on 26th of July across the Serbian border on a train from France. He told the Bulgarian authorities he was coming to Bulgaria for a week as a tourist.

The Bulgarian authorities received a message from the Schengen information system that Hamyd was reported as a missing person by his sister in France, the spokesperson of the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office, Roumyana Arnaudova, said. She added that the Bulgarian authorities were only obliged to submit information that the missing person was found.

On 28th of July, Hamyd crossed the border with Turkey but he was refused entry to Turkey because he was subject to a five-year entry ban by the Turkish authorities. The Turkish authorities returned him to Bulgaria on the basis of information that Hamyd was a fighter travelling for Islamic State and was especially dangerous.

The head of Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security was informed and issued an order for Hamyd to be deported from Bulgaria and a ban on entry into the country for 10 years. Hamyd had to be deported to Serbia, but meanwhile, on 29th of July, a European Arrest Warrant was received by the Bulgarian authorities, and Hamyd was taken into custody.

The French authorities suspect Hamyd of participation in an alleged organised criminal group for preparation of terrorist acts.

He was travelling alone and entered Bulgaria using his French passport, Arnaudova said.

On 10th of August, Sofia city court will hold a hearing on Hamyd's extradition.
