Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s office and Ministry of Interior report continuous drop in crime

Crime declne in Bulgaria continues. This trend was announced by the Prosecutor's office and the Ministry of Interior on March 4.

The spokesperson of the Chief Prosecutor Siika Mileva and the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior presented data, according to which there is a decrease in thefts, robberies, telephone frauds, murders. They also reported successful operations and many detainees.

In the fight against conventional crime in 2020, the country conducted 1,249 specialized operations in 3,090 places. As a result, more than 2,306 crimes were detected and charges were brought against 1,186 people.

Telephone fraud in 2020 decreased by 77%. Mobile operators have reported 29,049 calls for telephone fraud compared to 222,605 such calls for 2019. There are cities where no telephone scams were committed last year or only one was registered.

"We have been asked many times what the purpose of these specialized police operations in small towns is, including why the chief prosecutor, the minister of interior or the chief secretary are often there. The results clearly show why it made sense! The main goal is to ensure prevention and through systematic and uncompromising actions, to ensure more peace of mind for Bulgarian citizens, and hence more trust in the state and in what we are guided by, that everyone is equal before the law, " said the spokesperson of the Prosecutor General, Siika Mileva.

For the period from September 15 to the end of 2020, 981 operations were conducted to counteract the spread of drugs in the areas of educational institutions throughout the country. 508 juveniles involved in drug crimes have been identified. 221 people were detained and 297 pre-trial proceedings were initiated. Data on the activities of law enforcement agencies show that a total of 863 kg of cocaine, 49,027 kg of cannabis, 890 kg of marijuana and 360 kg of synthetic substances were seized during various operations against drug trafficking.
