The underground gas storage facility "Chiren" is filled at 100% of its technical storage capacity, gas transmission operator ‘Bulgartransgaz’ said on October 28.
According to the requirements of the European Regulation 2017/1938 on measures to ensure security of gas supply, no later than November 1 of each year, gas storage facilities in the European Union countries must reach at least 90% of their capacity. In 2024, for the second year in a row, this requirement was achieved by Bulgaria ahead of schedule, the gas operator stressed.
Bulgaria's only gas storage facility is essential for the energy security of Bulgaria and the countries of the Southeast European region. The achieved level of filling contributes to ensuring the security of natural gas supply for the upcoming heating season, Bulgartransgaz added.
A total of 12 companies - 7 Bulgarian and 5 international - store natural gas in the Chiren gas storage facility.
The Bulgarian gas transmission operator continues the implementation of measures in connection with the coming autumn-winter period.
