The Education and Culture Committee of the Sofia Municipal Council on March 7 approved the proposal to dismantle the Monument to the Soviet Army from the centre of Sofia.
The proposal foresees that the monument will be permanently relocated to the Museum of Art of the Socialist Period at the National Gallery or to another state-owned site outside the central part of the capital.
It is also planned to place an information sign on the current location of the monument, which would indicate that the monument symbolizes a foreign power that declared war on Bulgaria and occupied the country.
The final decision on the fate of the Soviet Army Monument is to be taken by the Sofia Municipal Council.
