5.2 kg of heroin were seized by customs officers from the Anti-Drug Trafficking Unit at Sofia Airport Customs House, the Ministry of Interior announced on 9th of August.
The narcotic substance was found in the checked-in luggage of a Bulgarian citizen traveling from Sofia to Madrid.
Pre-trial proceedings were initiated on the case. The investigation is under the leadership of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.
The passenger was detained on remand. He has been charged with attempted smuggling.
For the purposes of litigation, the seized amount of heroin is estimated at around BGN 500 000. At the illegal market, the value of such a quantity is estimated at more than 1.2 million BGN.
