The distinguished Bulgarian cardiologist, Prof. Alexander Chirkov, passed away on November 24.
He died suddenly last night in a hotel in Varna, at the age of 82. He was found by a friend without breathing activity. An ambulance was immediately called, but the resuscitation team that arrived only confirmed the death, the medical emergency centre confirmed for BNT.
Professor Alexander Chirkov was the cardiologist who performed the first heart transplant in Bulgaria and the Balkans in 1986. He worked in Germany for many years, after which he returned to Bulgaria and founded and managed St. Catherine's Cardiology clinic.
BNT expresses sincere condolences to the relatives and family of Prof. Chirkov.
