The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) which brings together European resources for the purchase and implementation of world-class supercomputers and technologies, announced the signing of a contract worth 11.5 million euros for a new supercomputer system in Bulgaria.
The system will be capable of more than 4.4 petaflops and will be located in Sofia Tech Park.
The new supercomputer will be used to accurately assess the seismic resistance of buildings, weather forecasting, medical applications in support of low-invasive diagnostics and the discovery of innovative treatments.
Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel said:
"I am very happy that the efforts started last year led to the acquisition of this new supercomputer system in my native country Bulgaria. This new supercomputer will help European research stimulate innovation and promote better science by providing access to leading HPC infrastructures and services - regardless of where they are in Europe. ”
Europe is at the forefront of next-generation investment in supercomputer infrastructure, which has huge positive effects on society.
An example of this is the EU's Destination Earth initiative, which aims to develop a very accurate digital model of the Earth that could improve weather forecasting, water management and environmental modeling.
Following the announcement of the LUMI supercomputer in Finland and the LEONARDO supercomputer in Italy in October, as well as three other supercomputers in the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Slovenia, the supercomputer in Bulgaria marks the latest addition to the supercomputer family.
