The Bulgarian National Television has exclusive footage of the Syrian man who blew himself up on 24th of July in the German city of Ansbach and injured 15 people. In two interviews for BNT taken in 2013, the Syrian Mohammad Daleel tells about his stay in Bulgaria and the problems he faced.

He arrived in Bulgaria with the refugee wave in 2013. He applied for protection and was granted a humanitarian status. He was accommodated in the registration-reception centre in Ovcha Kupel in Sofia. This is where the BNT team first met him.

In the interview with Mohammad, which was broadcast on 7th of September 2013, he told the BNT reporter Teodora Assenova that he fled the war in Syria, in which his closest people had died. Mohammad showed the scars of bullets which nearly killed him. He and a friend of his explained that they had paid a human smuggler, who helped them get into Bulgaria. The two ran out of money quickly. The Bulgarian state gave them 65 BGN per month. From the accommodation centre in Busmantsi, Mohhamad Daleel was transferred to the refugee camp in Ovcha Kupel, which was already over-crowded and he slept outside. He and his friend explained they sometimes had to sleep in abandoned buildings. They said that despite being in the street, they felt free. The only thing they were afraid of was the uncertain future, he said.

At the time, there were over 5,000 foreigners in Bulgaria and the five accommodation centres were over-crowded.The number of asylum seekers was increasing every day. Mohammad Daleel arrived in Bulgaria with the refugee wave in the summer of 2013 when increased refugee influx was registered. Over 7,000 migrants entered the country by the end of 2013, compared to 1,300 in 2012.

In a second interview taken by Teodora Assenova, Daleel shared that he came upon some fraudsters who took money from him and his friend in order to provide them with an external address in Sofia, but it turned out such address did not exist. The transport, for which Daleel and his friend paid in fact took them back to the refugee centre in Ovcha Kupel, where they were accommodated after having received status and lived in miserable conditions, he said.

In the interview, he said that he remained without money, without food and shelter and relied on friends from the refugee centre, who brought bread and milk and gave him a thin mattress. This happened in November 2013.

The full interviews was broadcast in the 20.00 newscast Around the world and at Home on BNT1.

In Bulgaria, Mohammad Daleel was granted a humanitarian status. He was not registered for any crimes in the country. He left Bulgaria in mid-2014. Daleel applied for asylum in Germany, but his application was rejected and had to be deported to Bulgaria. Later, the deportation was suspended because the German authorities received documents that Daleel had mental problems.

He had received two deportation notices and was told on 13th of July 2016 that he would be deported to Bulgaria.

On 24th of July, he blew himself up in Ansbach, Germany after failing to get into a music festival.

In a video found on his phone by the police, Daleel pledges his allegiance to ISIS, which claimed responsibility for the attack and called him a soldier of ISIS.
