Due to expanding ice formation on the Bulgarian section of the Danube river, the operational disaster management staff of the city of Rousse advises all shipmasters and ship owners to reduce navigation along the river to minimum and to seek artificial or natural shelters for the vessels if necessary.
The ice cover near Vidin on 10th of January is 80% and near Rousse is 60%. The transportation of cargos along the river has been suspended because of the low water levels.
The river supervision unit at the Bulgarian town of Lom said that shipping in the Serbian section of the Danube was banned and if needed, similar ban might be introduced in Bulgaria.
The Romanian ferry Silistra – Kalarash has not operated for two days because of the ice formation.
The agency for maintenance of the Danube river is urgently collecting and putting away the signs on the waterway to prevent them from getting broken or damaged by the ice blocks.
