GERB WINS IN MOST DISTRICT CITIES IN BULGARIA’S LOCAL ELECTIONS

The centre-right GERB party won the largest share of votes in most of Bulgaria’s district cities in the first round of municipal and mayoral elections, held on 25th of October, results of the recent exit polls show. In some major cities candidates will stand for a second round of voting.

The Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, was re-elected for a third term of office.

The Mayor of the Black Sea coastal city of Bourgas was re-elected with a convincing 80% of the votes.

The result for the current Mayor of Stara Zagora, also candidate of GERB, Zhivko Todorov, was very high, he received over 70 % of the votes.

Over 50% of the voters cast their vote in favour the incumbent mayors Atanas Gambitov in Blagoevgrad and Ivan Portnih in Varna.

The Mayors of Rousse, Dobrich and Veliko Turnovo, also from GERB, were re-elected.

Hasan Azis, the incumbent mayor of the liberal “Movement for Rights and Freedoms” in the city of Kardzhali was re-elected for a fourth term of office.

Petar Paunov, who was supported by a large right wing coalition was re-elected as the Mayor of Kyustendil, South Bulgaria.
