The caretaker government on January 4 adopted amendments to the Regulation on essential requirements and conformity assessment of toys. The changes provide for limiting the use of the substance aniline to 30 mg/kg in finger paints and in textile and leather materials for toys.
The purpose of the restriction is the prevention and avoidance of possible negative effects from residues of the substance that may be present in toy materials.
Aniline is classified as a category 2 carcinogen and a mutagen. Until now, it has been permitted for use in toys in concentrations equal to or less than 10 000 mg/kg.
The purpose of the restrictions is to ensure the highest possible level of protection for children. The amendment is part of Bulgaria's obligations to reflect changes in the existing European legislation.
