Greater flamingos have been spotted nesting on the territory of Bulgaria for the first time ever, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds reported.
About 80 birds are already incubating their eggs in Atanasovsko lake near Bulgaria’s coastal city of Bourgas. The newly formed colony includes 600 birds and the number of nests is likely to increase in the coming days, the scientists explained.
The flamingo is a bird sensitive to human presence. It is very important that during the nesting period there should not be any human movement in the lake itself, the Society for the Protection of Birds said.
In recent years, the flamingo has become the new symbol of our city. That is why the municipality of Bourgas has started to include the bird’s image more and more often in its advertising materials, the press office of the municipality said.
In addition to the flamingos, other species of birds live in Atanasovo lake including Dalmatian pelicans, sable-headed pelicans, angelfish, little and great egrets, teal, various species of ducks, etc.
