On 5th of February, the appeal court in the South Bulgarian city of Plovdiv upheld a decision of the lower instance court to keep the Head of Svilengrad Customs House, Todor Karaivanov, in custody.
According to the magistrates, rather than exercising control over his subordinates, Karaivanov took advantage of his office for corrupt and intentional purposes. The appeal court’s decision is final and is not subject to appeal.
Todor Kraivanov was detained on 28th of January during an operation of the Bulgarian State Agency for National Security. He was arrested while taking a bribe. His office in the customs house building was searched and 12,000 euro were found and seized, his lawyer Gergana Georgieva confirmed. 6,000 GBN were found in Karaivanov’s home. His lawyer says it has not been confirmed whether the money were marked or not.
On leaving the court room, Todor Karaivanov said that he was “a victim of those who controlled contraband at Svilengrad Customs House” and that they were “economic operators linked with customs officials”.
