Health authorities: The measures against Covid-19 should be continued beyond the scheduled end date of December 21

The figures on Covid-19 daily cases on December 15 remain unchanged compared to the ones from yesterday. Further 2,095 people tested positive for the virus; 7,045 are in hospitals and 580 people are in intensive care. Statistics give a definite argument to the medical professionals that the measures against the spread of Covid-19 should not be eased after the scheduled end date of December 21.

The manager of the Health Insurance Fund, Prof. Petko Salchev, suggested that the restrictions should continue for a week after the New Year holidays.

The measures were part of the topics discussed by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Health, the medical association and the Health Insurance Fund.

The Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) insists that the measures should not be eased before the holidays.

Dr. Ivan Madzharov, Chairman of the BMA: We do not see a decrease in the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals and intensive care units. In our opinion, any relaxation of the existing measures would be a risk for the healthcare system and after the New Year holidays we may find ourselves into an even more difficult situation.

Prof. Petko Salchev, Manager of the National Health Insurance Fund: I support the Minister’s proposal to extend the measures, and if you ask my professional opinion they should be in effect for at least a week after the New Year holidays. Because then there are other holidays and the healthcare system should not be burdened.

Prof. Kostadin Angelov, Minister of Health: We will hear the voice of the professionals, our colleagues who express their professional views on the measures and crisis management and I promise you that we will not be guided by emotions in decision-making.
