The MPs from the 45th National Assembly elected Iva Miteva-Rupcheva from "There is Such a People" party as Speaker of Parliament.
Her nomination was supported by 163 votes in favour from “There is Such a People", "Rise up! Thugs out. ”, BSP, MRF and “Democratic Bulgaria”.
Tsveta Karayancheva, who was a proposal of GERB-UDF, received 75 votes.
Transparency and accountability must be the basic principles of this National Assembly. Let's make efforts for dialogue with each other, Miteva said in her first speech to Parliament on April 15.
The 45th National Assembly also elected her deputies: Tsveta Karayancheva from GERB-UDF, Victoria Vassileva from "There is Such a People", Kristian Vigenin from “BSP for Bulgaria", Mukaddes Nalbant from MRF, Gen. Atanas Atanasov from "Democratic Bulgaria" and Tatiana Doncheva from "Rise up! Thugs out!”
Iva Miteva-Rupcheva was born in Razgrad (Northeastern Bulgaria) on October 25, 1972. She graduated in Law from Sofia University in 1996. She began her career at the Ministry of Justice in 1998. She was appointed at the National Assembly in 2000 as a state expert and with regular progression rose to director of the Legislative Activity and European Union Law Directorate. She was a member of the expert teams for preparation of proposals and discussion of changes in the Constitution of Bulgaria. Since 2007 she has been actively involved in drafting changes to the election laws.
She teaches law at New Bulgarian University and is doing a doctoral thesis at the Institute of State and Law with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
She speaks English.
Iva Miteva Yordanova - Rupcheva is the third lady to hold the post of Speaker of the National Assembly after Tsetska Tsacheva and Tsveta Karayancheva.
