Life expectancy in Bulgaria is 73.5 years

The life expectancy at birth of the country's population, calculated for the period 2021-2023, is 73.5 years, according to the National Statistical Institute (NSI) data. Compared to the previous period (2020-2022), life expectancy increased by 1.6 years. However, it remains lower than the pre-pandemic years when it was over 74 years.

The different mortality rates for men and women, as well as for the urban and rural populations, also determine the different life expectancy for these population categories.

The average life expectancy at birth for men is 69.9 years, while for women it is by 7.4 years higher and is 77.3 years. Compared to 2013, in 2023 we observe a decrease in average life expectancy of men by 1.1 years and of women by 0.7 years.

The average life expectancy of the urban population is 3.1 years higher (74.4 years) than that of the rural population (71.3 years). Compared to 2013, it decreased by 0.9 years for the urban population and by 1.3 years for the rural population.

Life expectancy varies from 70.3 years in Vidin district to 75.4 years in Sofia (capital) and Kardzhali districts. Life expectancy of women in all districts of the country is longer than that of men, but the difference is greatest in Vratsa District (8.5 years) and smallest in Shumen District (6.3 years).

The life expectancy indicator shows the average life expectancy of newborns under the assumption of no change in the intensity of post-age mortality observed in a given year.
