The repair works in the area of the Danube Bridge near Rousse has been suspended. They were scheduled to be finalised in days, but because of the cold weather and low temperatures, asphalt cannot be applied on the road surface. Thus, the long queues of lorries are expected to continue on both sides of the border for at least several months.
The repair works in the Danube Bridge area began in May with the promise of completing them a few months later in order to put an end to the kilometers long waiting line of lorries. So far, however, the only completed repair work is the enlarged road from the roundabout at the border crossing point to Silistra. However, the new route upon entering the country through the Iztok (East) zone of the Danube Bridge is still not operational and the vehicles are let through the old Zapad (West) zone in both directions.
Over the holidays, more than 20,000 cars per day cross the border, with lines of waiting lorries on both sides of the river.
However, a final solution to the traffic-related problems at the Bulgarian-Romanian border is expected with the construction of a second bridge over the Danube River near Rousse.
