The Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office has charged a man and a woman with fraud in which eight people suffered property losses of particularly large proportions. The total value of the losses is €707,679.09, or 1,384,100 leva.
According to the evidence gathered so far, between September 2023 and April 2024, the defendants, acting individually and jointly as part of a continuing offence, deceived eight people.
The victims were told that if they took out loans and transferred the funds they received to a particular company, the company would make the monthly repayments on their loans. They were also promised that the loans would be secured against property.
Pre-trial proceedings have been opened in connection with an offence under Article 211, in conjunction with Article 209(1), Article 20(2) and Article 26(1) of the Criminal Code. The law provides for a sentence of 3 to 10 years in prison for this crime.
By order of the supervising prosecutor, both defendants were detained for up to 72 hours.
The prosecution has asked the court to impose the most severe measure of restraint – remand in custody. The court granted the request and ordered that both defendants remain in custody.
The ruling may be appealed before the Sofia City Court.
