The mayor of the Northern Bulgarian town of Svishtov became a volunteer in the Covid-19 ward of the local municipal hospital. Currently, 12 patients are undergoing treatment there. The unoccupied beds are only 3. There is a shortage of medical staff, which is why the need for volunteers is very high.
Currently, a nurse, who has been in the ward for more than 20 days without going out and a healthcare assistant work in the Covid-19 ward of the hospital.
An external infectious disease specialist visits the ward to consult the condition of the patients. The unoccupied beds are running out and the need for staff is growing. As of today, November 6, Mayor Gencho Genchev is a volunteer there.
"It is not very easy, I see anxiety in people's faces because they are afraid for their lives, we have seen several cases where the thirst to inhale oxygen is huge and our main mission is to support people," said Genchev.
The hospital is ready to open another ward for the treatment of patients with coronavirus.
"Out of 15 beds, we have three more that are not occupied. We are in dire need of staff, medical staff, staff who can take care of patients," Ilian Venkov, the manager of Svishtov Hospital, told BNT.
The mayor says he joined the ward mostly for the psychological support of staff and patients.
"I have taken an oath - not a Hippocratic one, I have taken it before the people and the society, this is the main reason for me to enter into this situation," the mayor of Svishtov said.
Gencho Genchev will volunteer in the Covid department as long as needed.
