More than 2,000 medics have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on December 29. And in the three days since the start of the campaign, more than 3,700 people have been vaccinated. The country was divided into 6 vaccination areas and last night the last vials of the first delivery were distributed.
Dr. Stefan Filev is the head of the hospital in Veliko Turnovo and is the first to be vaccinated in the city to set an example.
"There are two ways to get out of the crisis – one is to go though the disease and recover, and the other through vaccination," he said.
160 vials of the vaccines arrived in Veliko Turnovo yesterday and 120 of them immediately left for Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo and Rousse. Thus, officially the first batch of vaccines that the country received was fully distributed.
The large-scale vaccination as a process and as an information campaign will begin no earlier than mid-January," said Health Minister Kostadin Angelov.
The vaccines from this first batch will now not be enough for all medics who wish to be immunised. Most will have to wait until the next delivery. In the last week, the number of medical personnel who want a vaccine has increased a lot.
"Uncompromisingly, this was my decision the moment I realized that there was already a vaccine," said Dr. Margarita Radeva of MOBAL "Dr. Stefan Cherkezov" in Veliko Tarnovo.
So far, the Executive Medicines Agency has reported only one adverse reaction after vaccination – redness on the shot site.
"There are many unknowns about the virus, more importantly, the vaccine delivered to the country builds immunity and this has been proven," said Health Minister Kostadin Angelov.
Immunity reaches levels sufficient to protect against the virus 20 days after the second dose.
