Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency has prepared more than 3,000 machines to clean the roads from the snow expected over the weekend, the agency said on 5th of January. Some non-primary roads will be closed during the night in order to remove the snow from them, the Head of Road Infrastructure Agency, Doncho Atranasov said on 5th of January. He said that the decisions for closures of the regional roads will be made by the directors of the district road management units.
He explained that all preventative measures have been taken.
Heavy snowfalls and strong winds were forecast for the next few days in northern and north-eastern Bulgaria.
The regions expected to be most-affected by the cold snap are Bulgaria’s main Black Sea city Varna, Rousse on the Danube, Silistra, Dobrich, Shoumen and Razgrad.
Snowdrifts of up to 50cm are possible.
Code yellow potentially hazardous weather warning, for snow and ice, was issued for 5th of January for 12 districts in Bulgaria: Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Lovech, Gabrovo, the capital city Sofia and the region around it, Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pernik, Pazardzhik and Plovdiv.
