MPs on 21st of February adopted the procedure for electing a new Central Election Commission (CEC) members. The term of office of the current CEC expires at the end of March.
MPs decided to give parties and coalitions a 14-day deadline, both from the Bulgarian and the European Parliament, to prepare their candidacies for CEC members. Non-governmental organisations will have 12 days to do so.
Danail Kirilov, Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament: We think that time is enough and that the public hearing will be prepared by professionals. There are such in the Bulgarian election process. Separately to the CEC there is a public council in which experts and specialists express their opinion. There are people with unique experience, I think there are candidates. I do not want to make comments, that we only make choices because of the BSP, to change and update their candidates ou of political loyalty to Ms. Ninova (BSP leader).
