Foundations of a Roman building, murals and unique floor mosaics have been found by archaeologists working on the restoration of the Great Basilica in the South Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
After a month of work, archaeologists and restorers have found two layers of mosaics. The lower layer is in a significantly better condition. The teams aim to move the mosaics, piece by piece, for further processing. After the restoration, with the same precision, the fragments will be returned to the Great Basilica and will be put together like a puzzle. Restoration will be based on photographs from years ago, when the site was first found in the 1980-ties.
The archaeologists are gathering hundreds of mosaic stones that have been scattered in various places around it. Parts of the artifacts are missing or destroyed.
Once all the fragments are revealed, the mosaics will be displayed in a special protective construction, which will be built on the place of the early Christian temple, dated back to 4th century.
