We report extremely positive data as a result of the introduced anti-epidemic measures, Bulgaria’s Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Kostadin Angelov said on January 7 at the regular briefing in connection with the current situation with the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The number of recoveries as a sustainable trend is twice the number of new cases, he stressed. 1,002 new cases of coronavirus were registered in the country for the past 24 hours, data on the National Information Portal shows. 10,088 tests were conducted, ie the percentage of positive cases from all tested is close to 10%.

Bulgaria continues to be in 24th place in terms of morbidity in the EU and 5th in the Balkans. In terms of mortality, the country is third in the EU, said Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev, Chief State Health Inspector. However, he clarified that due to the holidays, the European Centre for Disease Control does not publish data for this period due to lack of accuracy.

The districts with the least infection in the country - less than 120 per 100,000 - are Kardzhali, Razgrad and Gabrovo, he said. The highest incidence remains in the districts of Vratsa, Rousse and Varna.

Due to the pandemic, the mummers' festival in Pernik will be cancelled, Assoc. Prof. Kunchev said in response to a journalist's question. He added that if there are holiday celebrations in villages, they should be under special conditions and in compliance with the requirements for physical distance, wearing masks and no going from house to house.

7,913 people have already been vaccinated since the start of the campaign. "At the moment we have no information about side effects. If there are any, we will inform you", announced the President of the National Vaccination Task Force, Prof. Krassimir Gigov.

The first delivery of the Moderna vaccine in all European countries is expected next week. This was announced by the executive director of the Medicines Agency, Bogdan Kirilov.

The European Medicines Agency has given the green light for the use of the vaccine developed by Moderna. It can only be used for people over 18 years of age. Before it can be distributed in the Community, the EC must issue a permit for access to the European market.

"It's not time for politics. It is important to lead the citizens through this pandemic and to save their lives," the Minister of Health commented.
