The municipality of Karlovo, central Bulgaria, declared a partial state of emergency for the villages of Karavelovo and Bogdan because of the rising water level in the river. There is no risk for the residents, said Karlovo Mayor Emil Kabaivanov.
The state of emergency comes into force today, January 26 and will last for seven days. The reason is that over the past two weeks the water level in the rivers that run through the villages has risen. The level of the sediment that the water carries has also risen.
Yesterday, a commission had checked the level of the rivers and at a meeting today, the Crisis Management task force decided to declare the partial state of emergency, which was declared preventively, in the vent of risk of disaster. The Governor of Plovdiv has also been informed.
Tomorrow, equipment will be used to clear the riverbeds. They are 2.5 metres deep and between 8-9 metres wide, and currently in Bogdan at 60 cm everything is filled, Kabaivanov said. According to him, if there is a need the state of emergency will be extended, the water level in the village of Slatina is being monitored.
