Pirogov Hospital Sacks Medical Staff after Death of a Man

Medical staff from an emergency team in Pirogov hospital in Sofia were fired over refusla to admit a patient for treatment, Pirogov hospital announced on 27th of September following an internal check assigned by the Director, prof. Assen Baltov.

The check was undertaken in relation to an open letter by the wife of a man who died after he was refused medical assistance by the emergency team in the hospital.

The check identified that the team on duty in room 126 of the emergency ward of Pirogov hospital, did not register the patient in the information system of the hospital after the patient was brought in by an ambulance and a team of Sofia Medial Emergency Centre. No results of an examination were documented and no laboratory tests were made. It was also identified that the technical and technological rules were not observed and the team on duty did not fulfill the work duties.

The Medical Emergency Centre explained that they were delayed for an hour and 20 minutes because they were very busy that day and had 12 teams on duty servicing 275 emergency cases, including heart attacks, strokes and injuries from car accidents. They added they sent the first available ambulance to the address and the doctor and driver did their best to provide assistance.

In an open letter to the Bulgarian Minister of Health, the wife of the patient, Evelina Dobreva, described that on 16^th of September she called the emergency services but waited for an hour and half for an ambulance to arrive. Then her husband was taken to Pirogov hospital where he was refused assistance and was then taken to Alexandrovska hospital where the medical team did their best to help him, but he passed away.
