PM Borissov: Only united and strong Europe will guarantee peace

The European Parliament elections and the unity of Europe were the topics Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Borissov spoke about in the Romanian city of Sibiu, where an informal meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU countries takes place on May 9. Speaking at the forum, Boyko Borissov said that only a united and strong Europe could guarantee peace and justice.

This is the most important forum within the framework of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Today, the President Klaus Iohannis was the first person who arrived to the event. Sibiu is his hometown where he was also a mayor. Klaus Iohannis welcomed all European leaders, including Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, to the red carpet in front of the Town Hall where the quorum was held.

The European leaders got together again, with only one exception - the British Prime Minister Teresa May - to discuss the Union's strategic agenda for the period 2019-2024, joint peace-keeping actions in Europe and the world, the transformation of Europe into a global leader in the fight against climate change, and last but not least, the accession of new countries to the EU.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stressed the importance of joint action in the fight against terrorism, touched upon the topic of migration and the protection of the external borders and emphasised the importance of all Western Balkan countries joining the EU. He also pointed out that unfortunately the common European defence is only in words.

The Leaders' Meeting will end with the adoption of the Sibiu Declaration on the Common Future of the EU Countries, for ensuring the unity of the European Union.
