Rose growers in the region of the Bulgarian town of Kazanlak have complained that this year’s harvest of oil-bearing roses was exceptionally low. The average yield of rose petals has significantly dropped: from 250 kg per decare in 2014 to only 90kg per decare in 2015.
The reason is sharp changes in the weather during the spring – heavy rainfall in February and March followed by dry weather conditions and surprisingly low temperatures.
This has been the poorest harvest in the recent 16 years, despite of the care, rose growers say. Although the purchasing price will be high, the costs cannot be covered and this will lead to losses, they add.
However the quality of the rose petals this year is good. The content of oil is high and the fragrance is intense.
The harvesting of rose flowers will finish by the end of the week.
