In his first interview with BNT after he was sworn in, President Rumen Radev said that he would rely on experts for the caretaker government, which he would appoint. He was adamant that he would not take over the function of the Prime Minister and would not interfere in the work of any cabinet.

Rumen Radev said he wanted the caretaker government to be effective, to lead the country through the several difficult months until the next legitimately elected government. “I will rely on experts. And it must be clear that the caretaker government would not have the task to draft policies but to govern the country until the new government is elected,“ Radev said.

He said that the Bulgarian Socialist Party, which backed him in Bulgaria’s presidential elections in November 2016, in no way affected his choice of caretaker government but it did not mean he was banned from appointing people from the left.

“It is important to keep my independence, the objective judgment and freedom to take decisions alone,” he said.

“In any case I have no ambition to interfere in the work of any government, but the President under his powers has the right to ask questions, has the right to insist that the policy of the government should move in a direction that is in the interest of Bulgarian citizens,” Radev said.

In the area of foreign policy, Radev said he would try this policy to be formed the basis of the Bulgarian national interest within the alliances to which Bulgaria was a member.

As regards the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2018, Radev said that the country would put all the necessary efforts to be a worthy president.

“Certainly I would not give advice to other Heads of State, especially to the President of the United States,” he said.

Bulgaria's 5th President Roumen Radev assumed office in an official inauguration ceremony on 22nd of January. The interview was broadcast on the day of the inauguration.
