Bulgaria has natural resources for energy production and storage. This was the main message of President Rumen Radev, who on November 8 addressed heads of state and government at the 27th UN Climate Change Conference in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Rumen Radev also announced Bulgaria’s willingness to host the forum in 2024.
President Radev at UN Climate Change Conference: Bulgaria will deliver climate neutrality by 2050
The focus of the Climate Change Conference today was the link between energy, climate and the development of sustainable new technologies for low-carbon energy. Addressing the forum, President Radev noted that Bulgaria has excellent natural conditions, trained personnel in the energy sector, conditions for the production of energy from the sun and wind, trained nuclear specialists, and well-developed hydraulic engineering facilities. However, it is believed that our country is not making sufficient use of these opportunities. He announced that specialists in Sofia are working on an environmental project for storing energy in large quantities.
"This is a study of the open spaces and cavities just below the Maritsa basin. So this enormous power and potential that we have to build, a photovoltaic plant with a capacity of over 12 gigawatts, can compress air or water, so that we close the round-the-clock cycle of solar energy production and store energy in large quantities in the cleanest, environmentally friendly way. In this way we can also balance the energy systems of the countries around us," Rumen Radev added.
At the forum in Sharm el-Sheikh, President Radev also presented Bulgaria’s wish to host the Climate Change Conference in 2024.
"It is high time for our country to position itself even more proactively in terms of initiative, activity and contribution to sustainable development. To really show that we have serious ambitions in this area and serious opportunities. Along with the stable geopolitical positioning of the country, this will make a huge contribution to our economy, to the social system," the Head of State added.
According to the President, if Bulgaria’s candidacy is approved, it will have serious benefits for the country in many sectors.
