Prime Minister Denkov urges FIFA to discuss and propose possible solutions to the unprecedented situation with the Bulgarian Football Union

In a letter to FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Acad. Nikolai Denkov, called on the international football federation to get involved in the case with the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) in accordance with the rights and responsibilities set out in the FIFA statutes.

The reason for the letter is the accumulated tension that led to a mass protest against BFU President Borislav Mihailov on the day of the Bulgaria-Hungary match, accompanied by riots and violence in downtown Sofia last night.

The Prime Minister called on FIFA to discuss and propose possible solutions to the unprecedented situation. He referred to Article 8 (2) of the statutes: "Executive bodies of member associations may under exceptional circumstances
be removed from office by the Council in consultation with the relevant
confederation and replaced by a normalisation committee for a specific period
of time."

In the letter, the Prime Minister also highlighted the accumulated criticism and resentment against the BFU leadership and the unprecedented uniting of warring fan clubs against it. It also cited the fact that more than 140 clubs (out of a total of 550) that voted against the current BFU leadership were subsequently expelled from the Union after its congress in May 2022.
