"The European Union should stay united and avoid moving at two speeds", Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo told a news conference after their meeting in Sofia on 20th of September. After the talks, the two Prime Ministers commented the development of the Western Balkans, Schengen area enlargement and migration flow.

They also discussed the topic of the sharp criticism that French President Emmanuel Macron addressed to Poland during his visit to Varna. Macron then announced that Poland was in isolation and did not work in favour of the European interests.

Unity and compromise were key highlights in the statements of the two prime ministers. They have confirmed that they have many common positions - like migrants in Europe, for example. That is why Poland gave its support to Bulgaria on its way to Schengen.

“Bulgaria is doing so well with its obligations to protect the European external borders. We believe that the policy towards the Western Balkans must be ambitious and above all very open,” Beatta Szydlo, Prime Minister of Poland, said.

Borissov, for his part, stressed that he did not want to confront his Western counterparts.

On the subject of Schengen, Borissov advocated preserving the good tone between the leaders.

“It should not be a dividing line, and again I repeat, with tact and tolerance, we understand the more advanced countries, those with higher incomes and living standards and everyone wants to go there, their salvation passes through us, in order for our countries to reach them and to have no such pressure on them,”he said.

“We want to say that we will not allow ourselves to be divided because the European Union is priceless for all of us. We cannot divide, all those politicians and circles who want to divide the EU are actually trying to break it. We want unity,” Szydlo said.

Borissov and the Polish Prime Minister Szydlo also discussed the future of the mining industry in the two countries. This area is threatened by higher environmental quality standards that EU adopted.
