This year the Bulgarian farmers produced a record amount of wheat. This has been the best crop for the recent 20 years, the chair of the Bulgarian Association of Agricultural Producers, Ventsislav Varbanov said on 19th of September. He specified that Bulgaria produced more than 5 and a half million tonnes of bread wheat. According to him, more than 3 million tonnes are likely to be exported.
He added that although there was a record output, the prices were low, but they did not depend on political decisions in Bulgaria. The market is free and all depends on the international trade and process at the stock exchange, Varbanov commented for BTA.
He has also said that the grain is of a very good quality in comparison with previous years. According to him, this is due not only to the good year but because growers have increased knowledge about grain production.
So far, Bulgaria was neglected as regards quality of the grain. Large amounts were exported but were purchased primarily as fodder. Now there are applications and deals for bread wheat produced in Bulgaria, he added.
He also said that France was a traditionally big producer of grain and exported to Italy and Spain. However, its grain output this year was not so good. Varbanov noted that many traders from Italy and Spain showed interest in buying wheat from Bulgaria and there are deals signed. Bulgaria also exports both fodder and bread wheat to Greece.
The best grain now is purchased by Bulgarian flour millers and therefore the bread in Bulgaria is expected to be of a very high quality, Varbanov commented.
