Changes to the seniors-only shopping hours were introduced after wide-spread dissatisfaction. There will be one shopping period for shops and two for pharmacies.
As of November 14, between 13:30 and 16:30, grocery shops will only be open to people aged 65 and over. Lower age groups will not be allowed to shop during those hours.
Pharmacies will be open to people aged 65 and over between 08:00 and 10:00, and between13:30-16:30. No other age groups will be allowed during those periods.
The seniors-only shopping hours have been introduced through an Order issued by the Minister of Health. The Order comes into force on November 14.
On November 13, BNT teams spoke with many senior citizens who expressed their dissatisfaction with the previous shopping hours from 08:00 to 10:00. They said the period was too early in the morning, too short and some shops are not open at this time.
The national ombudsperson, Diana Kovacheva, described the 08:00 to 10:00 shopping hours as discriminatory.
