Severe Crash Blocks Traffic on Pass of the Republic

A severe crash between two TIR lorries and a heavy goods vehicle blocked the traffic on the Pass of the Republic (the pass in Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) for hours on 4^th of September. The incident occured just after 6;00 in the morning in the section between the villages of Voneshta voda and Vaglevtsi. The three drivers were taken to the hospital in Veliko Turnovo. Traffic is diverted via the Shipka Pass. Heavy goods vehicles are waiting in place.

Most severely injured was a 67-year-old man, the driver of one of the lorries. He has been taken to a hospital in Veliko Turnovo and is in a serious condition.

The pther two drivers were admitted to the emergency but without serious injuries. The most likely cause of the incident was an impropper overtaking, resulting in a head-on collision between the two TIR lorries and a third heavy goods vehicle, which crashed into them.

In many places in the country the road surfaces are wet and therefore the traffic police remind drivers to be extremely careful.
