Undeclared 130,000 euros have been identified by customs officers at Kapitan Andreevo Customs check point, at the border with Turkey. The smuggled currency, to the equivalent of BGN BGN 250,000, was hidden at the bottom of two boxes of biscuits and in the armrest of a car, the Customs Agency reported.
The car with Bulgarian registration arrived at Kapitan Andreevo border crossing late at night on 28 March 2019, on a route for incoming passenger cars from Turkey to Bulgaria.
Although the driver and passenger did not declare any valuables or excise goods, the vehicle entering the country was selected for a customs check.
Customs officers found 100,000 euros in different denominations of 50, 100 and 500 euros, hidden at the bottom of two boxes of biscuits. Another amount of 30,000 euros was found in the armrest of the car. The undeclared currency was owned by the passenger in the car - a Turkish citizen who is long-term resident in Bulgaria.
The undeclared currency of a total of € 130,000 has been seized. Criminal proceedings under Art. 251 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code have been initiated, conducted by an investigating customs inspector under the supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Svilengrad.
