The 10 day quarantine for arrivals from the UK will remain in force until January 31

At a working meeting on December 21 convened by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov with members of the government, it was decided that the 10-day quarantine for all citizens entering the territory of Bulgaria from the United Kingdom should remain in force until January 31, 2021.

Bulgaria is ready to allow flights from the UK after EU health experts and our country report decisions on the community's response to the new strain of COVID-19 after today's meeting of the mechanism for Integrated Political Crisis Response (IPCR).

The meeting with Prime Minister Borissov was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Ekaterina Zaharieva and Krassimir Karakachanov, Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rosen Zhelyazkov, Minister of Health Kostadin Angelov and Interior Minister Hristo Terziiski. The meeting discussed all measures that Bulgaria is taking regarding the new strain of coronavirus found in the UK.

"We have been through a lot since February, but we expect the European Medicines Agency to rule on the vaccines today," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

The Prime Minister ordered the necessary organization to be established in each sector, given the difficulties caused by the restrictive measures introduced yesterday due to the new strain of COVID-19. According to Borissov, adequate and timely actions are needed in connection with the expected accumulation of lorries at the borders. Borissov instructed the Minister of Interior to set up the necessary organization.

"There should be no queues of lorries and we should ensure that there is no contact between the passengers," Borissov stressed.

The Minister of Interior Hristo Terziiski emphasized that since last night the necessary organization for work in the conditions of distribution of the new strain of COVID-19 has been created at the airports in the country.

The Minister of Health stated that the new strain of COVID-19 has been found to spread faster, but that the vaccines work against it.

"That is why it is very important for Bulgarian citizens to stay healthy until the arrival of the vaccine," Angelov said.

The Prime Minister ordered the Ministers of Health and Foreign Affairs to organise the provision of vaccines for the citizens of Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia and the other countries of the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership, once the needs of Bulgarian citizens are met.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva reported to the Prime Minister that the ministry is in constant contact with the Bulgarian Embassy in London. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to assist the Bulgarians who have turned to our mission and are in Great Britain.

During the working meeting, the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rosen Zhelyazkov informed that the term of the order of the Minister of Health regarding the resumption of flights may be changed, when there is an assessment that it can be done .

"This means that incoming flights from Great Britain and Northern Ireland are restricted, but not departing passengers from Bulgarian airports. Cargo flights, humanitarian flights and medical flights are not restricted," said Minister Zhelyazkov.

With regard to land borders, the rules for "green" corridors apply, with the General Directorate of Border Police and the RHI establishing the necessary organization.

Minister Zhelyazkov also pointed out that France has also closed its land borders with the United Kingdom.

"Bulgarian lorries cannot leave the UK," the transport minister said, adding that he had asked the French transport minister to ensure the transit of Bulgarian lorries.

Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized that the ministry constantly monitors which other countries have closed their air, land and sea borders with Great Britain and how long the restrictions are in place.
