babies switched birth returned their biological mothers

The saga with the switched babies at Sheinovo Hospital is coming to an end. The children are expected to be returned to their biological mothers soon, BNT learned from the lawyer of one of the families.

The lawyer of the other family also confirmed that efforts were being made to resolve the issue out of court.

According to one of the lawyers, negotiations are currently underway for possible compensation from the hospital for the stress the families experienced.

According to data from the checks made, the two women gave birth on 13 September 20 minutes apart. Their rooms were on the same floor, opposite each other.

The wristbands of the mothers and babies were properly placed in the presence of two people. They were discharged from the hospital on 16 September.

Insufficient control at various levels led to the switch of babies in "Sheinovo" hospital - inspection results

Disciplinary sanctions were already imposed on three employees in Sheinovo hospital, with the senior midwife removed from her position and demoted, the hospital's executive director Dr. Rumen Velev told a briefing on the case of switched babies yesterday, January 10.

"I can now comment on the report we received on Friday from the Medical Audit. This report was not a surprise for us, many of the things coincided with our internal inspection, which was conducted to find out how the switch of the babies took place, which people possibly made a mistake,” he said.

The chief midwife, the senior midwife and the head of neonatology at Sheinovo hospital were punished for the switch of the babies.

Double-checking is now being applied when babies are discharged from the hospital.

"It is about the form we use, a standard form from the Ministry of Health, in which at discharge we write who handed the baby over to the mother and this person signs the document and the mother signs it. We are introducing two additions - in addition to the midwife who delivers the baby, there will be another member of staff signing the document - probably either a midwife on duty if it is out of working hours, or a senior or chief midwife if it is within working hours," he explained.

Velev said he has not been in contact with the families, but has met with their lawyers. It is agreed that the most important thing is to return the children to their biological parents as soon as possible.

"I can't tell you exactly what the procedure is, but anyway they expressed confidence that they are working towards that and they hope it will happen as soon as possible."

Even before the Medical Supervision Agency's findings, all protocols and standard procedures for a baby's path from birth to discharge had been reviewed, Dr Velev explained.

"We have started to revise these standards not because we have gaps in them, but so that we can build much clearer and more precise interrelationships so that there is no possibility of gaps and errors," he said.

Many employees of the hospital have been interviewed, the director added.
