Winter has its incredible beauty. Unique icy formations and curtains of icicles of the river Blagoevgradska Bistrica, South-Western Bulgaria, are a treat to see this winter.

The zoo in Kenana park in the Southern Bulgarian city of Haskovo is well prepared for the winter. All residents are provided with warmth and food. The crocodile has a room with warm water. The premises of the lions are also heated. The beautiful white and black swans are happy to swim in the icy water.

In the coldest winter days, the feathered inhabitants of the icebound lake in Park "Bachinovo" in the town of Blagoevgrad - the attractive pairs of white and black swans and 57 colourful semi-wild ducks - enjoy the warm care and attention. In order not to freeze completely, continuously running water is provided in the winter.

In freezing temperatures, it becomes necessary to regularly break the ice to provide water spaces which are vital for the birds, said Plamen Velichkov of municipal enterprise "Biostroy". He has looked after the birds for years and has maintained the lake. If the lake is iced and there is no water, the birds may become an easy prey ashore for foxes or stray dogs. In the water they are safe. Food is regularly provided for them.
